Did you know that the “playing cards” actually come from the Tarot and in fact, during the Renaissance was when this occurred. You can still see the cross over on some playing cards in Naples, Italy as the Kings, Queens, and so forth represents the Kings,Queens etc. in the playing cards. The “Jack” or “Knave” is the “Knight” and the FOOL card is the “Joker”, so if you know the Tarot, it is easy to read the playing cards. Diamonds=Wands, Spades=Swords, Hearts=Cups, Clubs=Pentacles. Then work with the Numbers as you would in the Tarot.

Manly P. Hall gives an esoteric lecture on the symbolism of playing cards.

Here are a few points of interest from this video:

  • The 10 numbered cards (Ace through 10) represent the 10 spheres in which the divine trinity operates
  • Each suit represents one of the elements: Hearts = Water; Clubs = Fire; Spades = Air; Diamonds = Earth
  • Queens were not in the original deck of cards. The King, Knight, and Page were used.  The Knight and Page were replaced by the Queen.
  • The original King in a deck of cards held a cross.
  • The 12 face cards (Kings, Queens, and Jacks) represent the 12 months of the year.
  • When a bottom half mirrored image of the face card was created, it represented the 24 hour day (12 face cards x 2 faces on each card = 24 hours)
  • Each suit has 13 cards x 4 suits = 52 cards, which represent the 52 weeks in a year.
  • If you add all of the spots on the cards, with Jacks =11, Queens = 12, and Kings = 13, the total number is 364.
  • The original deck only had one joker, which represented the 365th day of the year.
  • A second joker was added, which could possibly represent a “leap year”.

Some psychics can use playing cards to help tap into the subconscious mind of their clients to help their clients discover that which is buried by the subconscious mind. While this may be subjective to the reader it is also dependent of the mental well-being of the psychic during the time of the reading.

Around the 42:00 minute marker, Hall talks about how cards can be used for prophecy.

Manly P. Hall was born 1901 in Peterborough, Ontario to William S. Hall, a dentist, and Louise Palmer Hall, a chiropractor. In 1923 Hall moved from Canada to Los Angeles, California. In that year he was ordained to the Church of the People and published his first of over 150 works, The Lost Keys Of Freemasonry. Later in 1928, at the age of 27 years, he published The Secret Teachings of All Ages: An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy

In 1934, Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in Los Angeles, California, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the study of religion, mythology, metaphysics, and the occult.

It is claimed that Hall was made a knight patron of the Masonic Research Group of San Francisco in 1953, although he was not raised as a Mason until 22 November 1954 into Jewel Lodge No. 374 , San Francisco. He later received his 32° in the Valley of San Francisco AASR (SJ). On December 8, 1973 (47 years after writing The Secret Teachings of All Ages), Hall was recognized as a 33° Mason (the highest honor conferred by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite) at a ceremony held at the Philosophical Research Society (PRS). The definitive Manly Palmer Hall Archive states that Hall received the 33°, “despite never being initiated into the physical craft.”

In his over 70-year career, Hall delivered approximately 8,000 lectures in the United States and abroad, authored over 150 books and essays, and wrote countless magazine articles. He appears in the introduction to the 1938 film When Were You Born, a murder mystery that uses astrology as a key plot point.
